Ibovespa or Selic: which returned more over 1, 3, 5 and 10 years?
Measured to 2026-10-05 — 1 year: Ibovespa; 3 years: Ibovespa; 5 years: Ibovespa; 10 years: Ibovespa. Ibovespa here is the PRICE index (dividends would add a few points a year) and Selic is the policy target compounded per session, before tax. Past result, not advice.
| Period | From | Ibovespa (price) | Selic target, compounded |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 yr | 2025-10-06 | +44.1% | +14.4% |
| 3 yr | 2023-10-05 | +82.7% | +44.0% |
| 5 yr | 2021-10-05 | +87.3% | +81.5% |
| 10 yr | 2016-10-05 | +243.4% | +144.7% |
How it was measured
- Ibovespa: B3 daily close in points, first session on or after the start date to the last session.
- Selic: the Central Bank policy target (SGS 432) in force on each Ibovespa session, compounded as (1 + target)^(1/252). It is not the CDI (usually 0.10 point below) and has no income tax.
- Ibovespa is a price index: it ignores the dividends its companies paid. A total-return comparison would favour the index by a few points a year.
